The Institute of Energy, Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center (hereinafter “the Institute”), in collaboration with Anhui Energy Group and Anbang Technology Co., Ltd., successfully developed the “Key Technology and Equipment for Coal-Ammonia Multiphase Mixed Flash Evaporation and Plasma-Enhanced Combustion in Coal-Fired Boilers” after two years of joint research.

In the afternoon of July 5, 2025, the China Society of Electrical Engineering organized a project achievement appraisal meeting in Hefei. An appraisal expert committee, composed of nine renowned experts and scholars from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, China Datang Corporation Science and Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd., China Huaneng Group Xi’an Thermal Power Research Institute Co., Ltd., State Grid Anhui Electric Power Co., Ltd. Electric Power Research Institute, Jiangxi Jiangtou Group Energy Technology Research Institute, China Energy Construction Group Anhui Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd., Shanghai Boiler Works Co., Ltd., and Hefei Thermal Power Group Co., Ltd., conducted a thorough review and appraisal of the technical achievements. After listening to the detailed technical report from the project team, reviewing relevant technical documents, and conducting inquiries, Q&A, and discussions, the expert committee recognized that the project had achieved multiple innovative technical results:

1. Development of a 25 MW high-power liquid ammonia direct injection burner and supporting system, breaking through efficient multiphase (gas-liquid-solid) combustion technology for boilers and enhancing the carbon reduction capability of coal-fired boilers with ammonia co-firing;

2. Development of a flexible and adaptive liquid ammonia fuel supply system along with a full-furnace air distribution dynamic regulation and organization system, solving the challenge of multiphase fuel coordinated control and achieving rapid response and highly efficient clean combustion in ammonia co-firing boilers;

3. Development of an industrial-grade self-stabilized pure ammonia burner based on plasma torch and bluff-body composite enhanced combustion technology, solving issues such as high ignition energy and slow flame propagation speed of ammonia fuel, and ensuring stable combustion of coal-fired boilers with ammonia co-firing at low loads.

The expert committee unanimously concluded that the project features high technical difficulty, strong innovation and practicality, high economic value, and independent intellectual property rights. The overall technology reaches the international advanced level, with the liquid ammonia direct injection flash combustion technology for large-scale coal-fired boilers achieving the international leading level.

At present, the research results of this project have been successfully applied at Wanneng Tongling Power Generation Co., Ltd. In the future, green hydrogen-ammonia energy will be further promoted to coal-fired power plant boilers, industrial boilers, cogeneration boilers, and other fields, helping to achieve energy conservation, emission reduction, and carbon reduction goals, and providing practical solutions for the green and low-carbon development of China’s coal-fired power generation and other industries as well as the transformation and upgrading of the new generation of coal-fired power.
